6 Tips for Designing Cut Flowers

So you bring home your grocery store or florist who bought the flowers, what now I have seen many people drowning them in a bowl of water and that's it. Sometimes it works but here are some simple tips to make you look like a pro.

So you bring home your grocery store or florist who bought the flowers, what now! I have seen many people drowning them in a bowl of water and that is it. Sometimes it works, but here are some simple tips to make you look like a pro.

1) In a clean vase, take the greens first, cut the ends to the size you want and then start crossing the stems in the vase so that you have stems all over the inside of the vase. There are two reasons for this. One because you now have a base for flower arrangement and two; Crossing the stems makes the flower easier to place.

2) If you are making a small and low arrangement, insert the flowers into a cross-legged cross so the stems are all over the vase on the inside. You should now have a vase with a flower ring on the outside and nothing but the stems popping up in the center. (The more stems there are in a vase, the easier the flowers will stay in place!) The rows of flowers will be higher each time you go in so you get a nice round arrangement.

3) If you are doing a tall arrangement, use a thin tall vase. The flowers will hold up better and look well-proportioned. The wonderful flowers to use are tulips, blue delphiniums, lilies, snapdragons etc.

4) A design mistake I've seen a lot is placing the flowers in a vase quite evenly. The reason this doesn't work is because it appears unnatural. Take a look at any garden and you'll see some blossoms sticking out, some being folded up; Some of them are almost hidden but still contribute to the overall look. Imitate nature and you will not sin! Don't be afraid to tuck some of these flowers a little.

5) A good rule of thumb is to use odd numbers of flowers. What I mean by that is 3 flowers or 5. Even numbers are not effective. If you are using 5 roses for example, put 3 roses together (to the touch but of slightly different lengths) near the bottom center of the vase and then another 2 higher.

6) Another best advice I can give you if you are really new to floral design is to collect images of the floral arrangements you like and with the tips I mentioned above practice while looking at the pictures. Before long, you'd look like a pro!
